Emerging Technologies in Emergency Medicine

The Department of Emergency Medicine works closely with stakeholders across Columbia University, Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, and NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital to accelerate the responsible development, evaluation, and implementation of artificial intelligence that improves emergency patient care and advances the field of Academic Emergency Medicine.

Our Projects

Prior/ongoing projects include:

  • Use of natural language processing to evaluate teamwork communication
  • Leveraging large language models to support structured review of ED quality cases, including 72-hour returns and referred cases, to identify potential care gaps and quality-improvement opportunities
  • Machine learning & computer vision to automatically identify features on lung ultrasound
  • Developing an AI-enabled chatbot to provide rapid access to institutional policies and site-specific ED clinical pathways
