Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Collage of diverse smiling faces, of different genders races and ages. CUIMC Faculty from the Emergency Medicine Department

The principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion are fundamental to the practice of Emergency Medicine. Our mission is to cultivate an inclusive Department of Emergency Medicine that provides outstanding care to our diverse patient population and supports all of our staff, trainees, and faculty, especially those from backgrounds that have been historically excluded from medicine.

We seek to recruit, retain, promote, and support all individuals, with particular attention to those who identify as BIPOC, LGBTQ, women, immigrants, and from other marginalized groups to better reflect and care for the patient populations we serve. We are committed to anti-racism and anti-bigotry by promoting education and cultivating allyship. Our Department’s newly formed Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee provides specialized training, programming, and events on issues related to race, gender, identity, health equity, and belonging.

Our commitment to these values enhances our mission as a department of learning, progress, distinction, and innovation. Through our work, we aim to increase staff awareness and understanding of the diverse identities and experiences of their peers and to foster greater engagement, compassion, and excellent care for our patients.
